The CPD Edge: Planning Your CPD Goals and Targets

The CPD Edge: Planning Your CPD Goals and Targets

🎯 Start with purpose, not points.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is more than a requirement for maintaining AfN registration. It’s an opportunity to strengthen your expertise, uphold your commitment to stay current with the latest evidence, and shape the career you want.

As you plan your CPD, ask yourself:

✅ What knowledge or skills do I want or need to develop this year?
✅ Are there any gaps in my current practice or role?
✅ What areas of nutrition are emerging or changing?
✅ Where do I want my career to be in 12 months’ time?

A useful approach is to create 3 to 5 SMART CPD goals that are:
• Specific – clearly defined learning objectives
• Measurable – evidence of achievement
• Achievable – realistic alongside work commitments
• Relevant – linked to your current or future practice
• Time-bound – with a target completion date

Remember, valuable CPD comes in many forms. Webinars, training courses, conferences, reflective practice, mentoring, research activities, reading and learning from day-to-day work are just some examples of what can contribute to your professional growth.

💡 CPD Edge Tip: Don’t wait until the end of the year to think about your CPD record. Spend 30 minutes now planning your goals and you’ll find it much easier to identify meaningful learning opportunities throughout the year.

What’s one professional skill or area of knowledge you’d like to develop in the next 12 months? Share it in the comments.
