The CPD Edge: Planning High-Impact, Reflective CPD

💡 The most effective CPD isn’t about just doing more or hitting a set number of hours. It’s about learning with intention and reflecting on the impact and its application.

As ANutrs and RNutrs, we’re all busy balancing competing priorities. That’s why it’s important to focus not only on what CPD activities we undertake, but also on why we’re undertaking them and how they influence our professional practice.

High-impact CPD starts with a clear objective. Before signing up for a webinar, conference, event or training session, consider:
✅ What am I hoping to learn?
✅ How does this align with my professional goals or current role?
✅ What knowledge, skills, or behaviours am I looking to develop?
✅ How will I be able to apply this learning in practice?

Just as importantly, make sure you take time to reflect afterwards.

Reflection turns an activity into meaningful professional development. It helps you identify key learning points, consider how your thinking has evolved, and recognise opportunities to apply new knowledge in your practice.

When reflecting, ask yourself:
🔍 What did I learn?
🔍 What surprised or challenged me?
🔍 What were the strengths and weaknesses of what was presented?
🔍 How will my learnings influence my future practice?
🔍 What further development might I need?

🎯 CPD Edge Tip: Rather than simply focusing on completing activities, focus on the difference they can make. The most valuable CPD is learning that enhances your confidence, improves your practice, and ultimately benefits the people and communities you support.

As we wrap up this CPD Edge series, remember that successful CPD is ongoing, purposeful, and reflective. Small, consistent steps throughout the year can have a significant impact on your professional development.

What’s been your most valuable CPD experience this year, and what did you learn from it?
