Scenario: What should a registrant do if they lack expertise?
Imagine you’re asked to provide advice or lead work in an area of nutrition that falls outside your knowledge, skills or experience.
What should you do?
The AfN Standards of Ethics, Conduct and Performance are clear that registrants must recognise the limits of their competence and only practise within their scope of expertise.
This doesn’t mean saying “no” to every new opportunity. It means being honest about your current level of knowledge and taking appropriate steps to ensure high-quality practice.
It might include:
-seeking advice or mentoring from a more experienced colleague
-undertaking relevant learning and development activities before taking on the work
-collaborating with others who have the necessary expertise
-referring the work on to someone better placed to provide the required support/service
Professionalism isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about recognising when you need support, when to refer on, and acting in the best interests of those who rely on your expertise.
By working within your competence and seeking guidance when needed, you uphold the standards of the profession and help ensure safe, effective and evidence-based nutrition practice.
Code in Action explores how the AfN Standards guide professional practice every day.
