Code in Action: Declaring conflicts of interest

Declaring conflicts of interest
Trust is at the heart of professional practice, and being open about potential conflicts of interest is an important part of maintaining that trust.
In this edition of Code in Action, we’re exploring how the AfN Standards of Ethics, Conduct and Performance apply to declaring interests that could influence, or be perceived to influence, professional judgement.
The declaration of an interest isn’t necessarily a problem in itself. They can arise whenever personal, financial or professional interests intersect with your practise. What matters is recognising these situations, being transparent about them and undertaking any relevant mitigations or actions.
For ANutrs and RNutrs, this includes:
– membership, support or participation in nutrition-related campaign groups or activities
– declaring financial relationships, sponsorships or funding
– being open about commercial partnerships or affiliations
– clearly distinguishing evidence-based advice from any promotional or advocacy content
– ensuring professional judgement remains objective and in the best interests of those you serve
Transparency helps the public, colleagues, employers and clients understand the context of the information being shared and supports their confidence in the nutrition profession.
By declaring interests openly and appropriately, registrants demonstrate integrity, accountability and a commitment to ethical practice.
Code in Action explores how the AfN Standards guide professional practice every day.
