Statement: Letter issued by AfN to BANT on 29.03.2018 (UPDATED 18.05.18)

We, Association for Nutrition (AfN) wrote to BANT, a private limited company (no 3333951) on 29th March 2018.  We (AfN) asked (1) BANT to change their recently revised registered company name, the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (formerly known as the ‘British Association of Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapists’) to remove our charitable name, ‘Association for Nutrition.’  We (AfN) also requested (2) that BANT does not now, or in the future, whether publicly or privately, encourage its members to use the term ‘Registered Nutritionist’ or ‘Registered Associate Nutritionist’ unless their members are also qualified to use the terms with us, and further, to inform its members that use of these terms is only permissible if their members are registered with us (AfN/United Kingdom Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN)).

Statement Update: Following subsequent correspondence between the two organisations, we (AfN) are continuing to consider our position and take advice from our legal Counsel. Whilst we (AfN) do so, we (AfN) have provided BANT with confirmation that we (AfN) will not in the interim commence legal proceedings against BANT members using the term Registered Nutritionist. Should we (AfN) decide to commence proceedings, we (AfN) have provided an assurance to BANT that we (AfN) will provide them with due notice of any intended action.

We (AfN) continue to remain fully committed to achieving a productive and sound relationship between our two organisations for the benefit of the public.
